Rules for Submission
- Teams will have a maximum of 4 students. All teams must be supervised by a teacher;
- One idea per team with a maximum of five (5) teams per school;
- Schools can submit a maximum of 1 idea per category across all teams;
- Students cannot “steal” or “copy” ideas off of current published apps. If the team would like to build on or improve on a certain app, that can be accepted. However, merely changing the description and submitting someone else’s idea is not acceptable and are grounds for immediate dismissal from the competition.
Deadline Date for entries is: 28th September, 2018.
Screening Activities
The following will be the screening criteria for submitted entries (Scoring Range from 1- lowest to 5-highest):
- Problem Statement
- Description of the identified problem or issue and how this problem affects the country.
- Uniqueness
- Does the problem solution proposed in the idea have originality in it?
- Marketability
- How much potential appeal is there?
- General Appeal
- Did the team demonstrate passion and enthusiasm?
- Is it socially and personally appealing, relevant, or exciting?
Selection of Finalists
Submitted entries will be screened with the selection of the top ten (10) teams to:
- Attend a Wireframing Workshop on the 13th and 27th October, 2018.
- Pitch their ideas on the 9th November, 2018 at the Centre for Enterprise Development, Freeport. The overall winner will be scored on Impact, Innovation, Sustainability, Product and Presentation. Each participating team will present for ten (10) minutes, followed by a two (2) minute question and answer by the judges.
Judging Criteria
The following shall be the judging criteria to be applied to the competition:
- Impact (20%)
- How much impact (quality and quantity) could the solution have on the market?
- Could the solution solve a big problem or a little one?
- Could the solution make a big or little change to the problem identified?
- Innovation (20%)
- How creative/innovative is the solution?
- Sustainability (20%)
- Does the app have commercial potential/value?
- Product (20%)
- How well does the solution meet the needs of the problem tackled?
- How user-friendly is the app?
- Is it a complete solution or is there a long timeline before completion?
- Presentation (20%)
- How well was the app idea communicated and demonstrated?
- How well did the team or individual respond to questions asked by the judges?
Commercialization / Incubation
The winning team will be required to attend one (1) coaching session (technical and business) per month over a three-month period with CARIRI’s mCentre (mobile applications centre), which provides a tailored Incubation Programme for web and mobile applications. The incubator is the perfect bridge to make the big step from idea to execution. The app is projected to be built over this three-month period.
