CARIRI's Sustainable Energy Programme and has been actively pursuing efforts to build capacity to meet the demand for services in the area of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

This new service area is expected to:

    • Expand our service base to meet public and private sector demands for new and emerging technology-based services in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
    • Facilitate and support public and private sector initiatives for energy efficiency and renewable energy
    • Assist public sector companies in assessing and reducing their energy and resource usage thereby increasing their profitability
    • Sensitize local businesses and the general public about climate change and its impacts
    • Mitigate environmental pollution through better management

The Caribbean Development Bank /Government of Canada

CARIRI’s decision to become involved in the determination of Green House Gas Emission Inventories was influenced by several factors. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) is a party to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is a signatory to both the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Convention and as such has committed to binding emission reduction goals.  In order to meet these goals, the Government of TT has approved a Carbon Reduction Strategy in 2015 which targets energy efficiency and GHG emission reduction in the transport, power generation and industrial sectors. At the same time, the Energy Chamber of Trinidad of Trinidad and Tobago had indicated an initiative for development of a Carbon Market project which will trade local carbon offsets.  Interlinked with these two factors is the knowledge that companies which reduce their GHG Emissions by improving technology at the same time realize energy cost savings.

CARIRI embarked on a training activity to develop the capability to measure organisational green house gas emissions, reductions due to GHG emission reduction projects and to verify the measurements as an independent third party. This greenhouse gas inventory training was conducted by the Canadian Standards Association from May 8th – 11th 2017 at CARIRI’s Centre for Enterprise Development Facility at Freeport Trinidad 

A team of six persons selected from various departments at CARIRI were joined by a representative from the Caribbean Development Bank for this training. Funding for this training was provided by the Caribbean Development Bank under the Canadian Government Support for the Energy Sector in the Caribbean Programme.

International Collaborations

Danish Technical Institute (DTI)

In July 2017, CARIRI engaged the services of Mr. Soren Draborg, a Consultant from the Danish Technological Institute (DTI) to undertake a short term consultancy assignment. Mr. Draborg worked with CARIRI’s Sustainable Energy Unit (SEY) to conduct of an in-depth assessment of the local demand for energy efficiency services and advised on available  technologies/methodologies to cost effectively address the identified local needs, as well as the undertaking of capacity building of the SEY team.

Mr. Draborg again visited Trinidad, November- December 2017, to undertake a second phase of consultancy support to CARIRI. This would involve, in collaboration with team members of CARIRI's Energy and Resource Usage Assessment Programme, the conduct of three energy and resource usage assessments (energy audits).

Mr. Draborg was the feature speaker at two successful seminars focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy during his visits:
